GHOST  EDITIONS

Ghost Editions is a digital printing atelier in Sag Harbor, New York. Ghost works with artists who make multiple visits to the studio to develop editions and exhibitions of pigment and carbon prints.
Ghost is an extension of the long tradition and large underground industry of artists' assistants in urban art centers and the Hamptons, who are rarely credited or even known, hence the “Ghost”.
The business model for Ghost is different than most printers. For qualified artists, there is never any charge or obligation to develop a full size mockup of the first print, not least because the finished project includes improvements resulting from the methods, materials, equipment, and presentation possibilities, all of which have to be discussed at full scale.
The proof is then the center of a meeting with the gallery, where all details are worked out, sometimes involving an architectural model of the show, and considerations down to the shipping crates. The final per print cost of the project is in line with the published rates of the other top printers.

Techno

Ghost owns an Atlas Suntest Xenon Test Chamber for in-house archival testing of materials.  Extensive comparison testing has shown that a Carbon (piezography) print or a Pigment (cmykog) print on rag paper (Hahnemuhle) with a sprayed coating (Clearstar) will hold up as well as a platinum print, a b/w fiber print, or an acrylic painting. Prints on canvas and tyvek are almost as good.
Ghost prints with modified Roland 44” and 54” printers. We don’t use light cyan or light magenta inks, and won’t make a print without varnish.  Ghost’s frame shop does mats and metal frames, and the wood shop does stretchers and crates.
Input is by BetterLight 8k scanning back with Northlites, or Imacon 4x5 semi-drum film scanner.

About Digital Cameras

Files from the better 35mm digital cameras are not useful for prints beyond 20" x 30" if a ‘photographic’ quality is expected. However if ‘style’ is the goal, a postage stamp sized file can be fabulously bad/good at four by eight feet. Only a full size proof can show if the desired result can be obtained.

Who

The “Ghost” is Warren Padula, an artist with an international resume, multiple museum collections, and 30 years experience as an artists' assistant.
